UTM parameters are small snippets you append to a link address — for example ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=summer. They tell your analytics tool (Google Analytics and co.) where a visitor came from: which platform, which ad, which newsletter.
Without UTM parameters, much of your traffic ends up in the Direct or Unknown bucket — you do not know which post, ad or email actually drove clicks and sales. With UTMs you see exactly that.
The UTM builder does the assembling for you: enter source, medium and campaign and get a ready-made tracking link you can share right away — no code needed.
Marketing without measurement is guessing. UTM parameters reveal which channel is worth it — and which just costs time and money. So you put your budget where it actually works, instead of posting blind.
Three are the key ones (source, medium, campaign), two are optional (term, content). Here is how to use them:
utm_sourceThe source — where the click comes from.
z. B. instagram, newsletter, google
utm_mediumThe channel type — the kind of traffic.
z. B. social, email, cpc, affiliate
utm_campaignThe campaign — the occasion or promotion.
z. B. summer_sale, launch, black_friday
utm_termOptional: the keyword — mainly for paid search.
z. B. running_shoes_men
utm_contentOptional: the variant — to tell two links apart.
z. B. button_top, banner_bottom
An example — the base address plus the appended parameters:
https://yourshop.com/offer?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=summer_saleEnter the base URL
Add the address the link should point to — your page, your shop, your offer.
Source, medium, campaign
Fill the key fields. Term and content are optional if you want to measure even more precisely.
Copy the link
The UTM builder assembles everything correctly — one click and the finished link is on your clipboard.
Share & analyze
Use the link in a post, ad or email. In Google Analytics you then see source, medium and campaign neatly separated.
Anywhere you want to know whether a channel pays off:
Social media posts
Measure whether Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn brings the better clicks — one link per platform.
Paid ads
Track Meta and Google ads cleanly: which campaign, which ad actually sold?
Email & newsletter
See which email and which button triggered the most clicks and sales.
Influencers & affiliates
Give each partner their own UTM link — so you know exactly who drives revenue.
QR codes in print
Make offline campaigns measurable too: put a UTM link into a QR code.
Banners & partnerships
On guest posts or banner deals you see which placement pays off.
Bio links
Several links in your bio? With UTMs you see which one actually gets clicked.
A/B tests
Tell two variants of the same link apart with utm_content and compare them.
A UTM link quickly gets very long and ugly. With promolinks you turn it into a short, branded link — including your own click stats and a QR code, so you analyze everything in one place.
Open the URL shortenerWith a free promolinks account you shorten your UTM links, see the clicks right in your dashboard and get the most out of every campaign — plus a QR code.
